Tricks to Keep Air Plants Healthy & Alive:

  • Adequate Light -

Indirect, bright, filtered light works best for air plants. An air plant under long periods of intense, direct sunlight will dry out easily. More the humidity in your environment, the more light the air plant can endure.
  • The right amount of water -

Contrary to popular belief, air plants need water to sustain. The right way to do so is to submerge them in a bowl overnight. After soaking, shake off any excess water which can cause rot, and allow it to drip dry. You can water your air plants once a week during summer and once in three weeks during winters. If the leaves look browned and crispy it may be a sign of your plant being under-watered. A healthy plant would have clear colored and flexible leaves.
  • Fresh air -

This is an often-overlooked component but is key for your air plant to grow healthily. Since the air plant gets its nutrients from air, hence it is important to keep it in a well-ventilated area or near a window.
  • Cozy temperatures -

Air plants are quite comfortable in a wide range of temperatures between 50 and 900. However, keeping them in colder temperatures for more than 24 hours is not prudent as that strays far from its natural Tropical climate. Do not put them near heating vents at as that strips the air of its natural humidity which is essential for the air plant to grow.
  • Satisfying hunger pangs -

While fertilizing this plant is not strictly needed, you can use a Bromeliad mix, combine it with water and feed your air plant once a month. Make sure to not over fertilize the plant as that can cause it to burn.
  • Handle with care -

Touch these plants as little as possible as they are quite delicate in nature. Make sure to not display them in enclose containers as that prevents the circulation of air which is essential for its survival. Avoid copper wires and pipes as that can be extremely toxic to the plant.

With the right care, these plants make the perfect piece to complete your home décor.
