Ixora, whose flowers are often offered to deities, derives its name from the sanskrit word "Iswara", meaning god. There are about 400 species spread from Africa to India to Southern Asia. Ixora is a dense, multi-branched evergreen shrub, which has a rounded form. The glossy, leathery, oblong leaves are about 3" long, with entire margins, and are carried in opposite pairs or whorled on the stems. Ixoras freely produce red, orange, pink, or yellow flowers. This plant which blooms throughout the year is easy to grow. Ixora flower has traditionally been associated with enhanced sexuality and the re-kindling of passion.

Ixora is a sun-loving plant. While it tolerates some shade, bright sunlight brings out vibrant colors and more prolific blooming. However, in hot climates, the shrub benefits from light shade during the hottest part of the afternoon.
